Buhari Order Immediate Arrest Of Okonjo-Iweala And Emefiele

It has long been established that a
subordinate has no legal obligation to obey
illegal orders from his/her superior.
This point is important as we examine the

recent nauseating revelations about the
huge sums of money that the former
finance minister, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
and Central Bank governor, Godwin
Emefiele, made available to the now
arrested former National Security Adviser,
Sambo Dasuki.

Few days ago, Okonjo-Iweala admitted
giving Sambo Dasuki the sum of $322m on
the orders of former President Goodluck
Jonathan. Before that the same Okonjo-
Iweala admitted spending $2bn from the
Excess Crude Oil account on the orders of
the former President.

The Central Bank of Nigeria under Godwin
Emefiele has admitted giving Sambo Dasuki
billions of Naira and dollars on the orders
of the former president.

A good part of these monies were given to
Sambo Dasuki in cash in clear
contravention of existing anti-money
laundering laws by the country’s chief
banker. Let us put the money laundering
issue to the side for now.

The problem with the orders from the
former President to the then finance
minister and current CBN governor is that
they were illegal.

Neither the President nor any other
government official in Nigeria has the legal
authority to order the spending of funds
that have not been appropriated by the
National Assembly! Both subordinates
knew or ought to know that the orders
they were obeying were illegal and should
have refused to comply.

Resignation was an option. Between these
two subordinates they cost the nation in
excess of $5B by obeying the referenced
illegal orders. That is just what we know so
far and this kind of behavior is going on at
every level of government everyday.

The arrest and prosecution of Okonjo-
Iweala and Godwin Emediefe will send out
the message that “the president ordered the
payment” is not a defense known to the
laws of Nigeria.

Their prosecution is imperative in light of
the fact that a lot of the money being stolen
in the country is not in the custody of the
people stealing them. They rely on a group
of people that I call facilitators in an
upcoming article to get access to public
funds in the custody of the facilittors.

In almost every case of monies made
available to Sambo Dasuki, all those
making the money available were
following illegal orders and they knew it.
The time has come for Buhari to beam the
searchlight on this group of people.

The commercial bankers who allow
government officials to come into their
banks and withdraw millions and billions
in cash in apparent violation of anti-money
laundering laws are facilitators of
corruption because they know the funds
are dirty hence the need to terminate the
paper trail through cash withdrawal. The
bankers ought to be in jail too partly
because they make tracing these funds
more complicated.

To understand the importance of
subordinates not obeying illegal orders,
imagine that Okonjo-Iweala, NNPC and
Godwin Emefiele refused to obey the
former President’s illegal orders and
resigned under pressure and spilled the
beans.

With Nigerians fully aware of the
attempted fraud it would have been
difficult for their replacements to obey the
same illegal orders.

Buhari’s anti-corruption war must involve
establishing a culture that encourages civil
servants, and bank employees to disobey
illegal orders.

This will prevent our money from leaving
the treasury rather than chasing after the
money after it has been stolen.
Before closing I will like to remind people
that a majority of the civilians and military
officers who were tried, executed or jailed
by the post-World War 2 Nuremberg Trials
courts in Germany were obeying orders
from Adolf Hitler.

The problem was that Adolf Hitler had no
legal basis for issuing the orders and those
who ended up being executed for obeying
the orders had no obligation to obey the
orders.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Godwin Emefiele
should be familiar with the Nuremberg
Trials. The lesson is that a superior cannot
order a subordinate to do anything that the
superior has no authority to do himself/
herself.

Metropolitan Police apologises for not helping enslaved Nigerian man when he reported his captors 15 years ago

In an exclusive interview with BBC London's home affairs
correspondent Nick Beake on Wednesday, December 9, the
Nigerian man held as slave for 25 years, Ofonime Sunday
Inuk revealed that he reported his captors (Dr Edet and his
wife) 15 years ago (2004) only for police to say they could
not help him as it was a "family matter,"
Now, the force say it was "really regrettable" it had missed
earlier opportunities to help Mr Inuk.
Det Chief Inspector, Phil Brewer of the Met Police trafficking
and kidnapping unit said:

"It's really regrettable that that happened."
He said the Met now worked with many organisations and
local authorities to help prevent similar scenarios occurring
where "people are not listened to or not believed."
Inuk, who is now 40 said:

"I was so happy, thinking it would change my life, but I
was just a person's property," he told Nick Beake.
"I wanted to commit suicide, I couldn't bear it."
After 15 years he reported his intolerable situation to the
police.

"They didn't help me"
"They told me that if I wanted to report them [his captors]
they would have to come to the house. The Edets would
have turned me out and I would have got myself in trouble."
When he told the police the Edets had confiscated his
passport, he said:
"They told me there was nothing they could do" because
it was a "family matter".
He was encouraged to seek help from the police a second
time in 2013 after hearing about a slavery case on the radio
and Met detectives finally helped him to escape nine years
after he first contacted them.

Donald Trump's Anti-Muslim plan disqualifies him from Presidency - White House

The Republican front-runner on Monday released a
statement calling for the U.S. to refuse entry of foreign
Muslims. His proposal was met with widespread criticism,
including from several candidates in his own party, and now
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest says such a
statement disqualifies him from serving as the President of
the United States Of America.

"The fact is what Donald Trump said yesterday
disqualifies him from serving as president," Josh
Earnest said in Tuesday's press briefing. "For
Republican candidates for president to stand by their
pledge to support Mr. Trump, that in and of itself is
disqualifying," Earnest said.

"The question now is about the rest of the
Republican Party and whether or not they're going to
be dragged into the dustbin of history with him. And
right now the current trajectory is not very good. The
Trump campaign for months now has had a dustbin
of history-like quality to it," Earnest said.
Secretary of State John Kerry also rebuked Trump's
comments.

"I would simply say that nondiscrimination and equal
treatment are a pillar of not just American values but
of our immigration and our admission policies in this
country and the State Department remains totally
committed to treating all religions with respect and
without discrimination," Kerry said during a press
briefing in Paris. He added, "As I travel around the
world, it is clear to me and how both our friends and
our adversaries watch and listen to the discourse in
the U.S., and I believe that comments such as those
that we just heard are not constructive - and I would
say that is putting it diplomatically."

Guess what Tanzanians did on their Independence Day today?

Instead of celebrating, they swept the whole country. Today
if the country's 54th Independence day and the new
president Dr John Pombe Magufuli told his people to use the
day to clean up the environment and Tanzanians responded
in their thousands.

And the new president even joined hundreds of residents in
the main city Dar es Salaam to take part in the public clean-
up operation. He did his clean up duties at the famous Ferry
fish market near the State House; the country's Vice
President Samia Suluhu Hassan tackled the famous Oyster-

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON),
has expressed confidence in the quality of
graduates produced by the institution,
saying they have been trained not only in
learning but also in sound character.

Prof. Ambali stated this last Tuesday,
(November 24, 2015) when the Deputy
Director, Mobilisation of the National
Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Sanusi
Abdulrasheed, visited him in his office. The
NYSC official was in the University for a
pre-mobilisation briefing for final year
students who were getting ready for their
one-year compulsory national service.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented
by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research,
Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel
Olatunji, observed that graduates of the
institution have been exposed to challenges
and have developed the skills to solve
problems.

He said, “With particular regard to our
prospective corps members here, we
certainly can beat our chests and say that
we always give you good ambassadors”.
The Vice-Chancellor said that wherever
they are, the Unilorin products have
“always demonstrated that they graduated
from this University not only in learning
but also in sound character that matter.
So,
we can always give you that assurance that
our students are well brought up. They
have been properly moalded through the
furnace of the University academically and
morally”.

He noted that the NYSC has remained
relevant and significant to national life
over the years, saying the Scheme had been
bedeviled by challenges, in particular, the
insurgency posed by the Boko Haram
insurgents in the North-eastern part of the
country.

He, however, commended the NYSC for
doing everything possible towards
alleviating the suffering of the corps
members and making life a bit comfortable
for them.

In his remarks, the Deputy Director,
Mobilisation, NYSC Abuja, Mr.
Abdulrasheed, explained that the purpose
of the visit was to educate the prospective
corps members on what they need to know
about the process of mobilisation to
facilitate and guarantee a hitch-free
process, especially with the deployment of
online procedures in the mobilisation
process.

Speaking earlier, the Deputy Registrar,
Student Affairs, Mrs. Kikelomo Sallee, said
that the sensitisation was important in
order to guarantee a hitch-free
mobilisation exercise, which, in the past,
was usually fraught with some challenges.

N.Y.S. Ijaiya; the University Librarian, Dr.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
on Wednesday began the grilling of a former National
Security Adviser, Mr. Sambo Dasuki , following his
transfer by the Department of State Security Service
(DSS).

There were indications that the anti-graft commission
may extend its probe to the seizure of $9million cash-for-
arms by South Africa and quiz all those involved in the
botched deal.

An Israeli suspect implicated in the deal was said to have
bolted away after throwing a lavish party at his Wuse
residence.

But there was no respite for ex-Governor Attahiru
Bafarawa, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi and ex-Minister
Bashir Yuguda who were battling for bail on Wednesday.

The Nation learnt that the EFCC was planning to arraign
some of the suspects in court to enable the agency keep

Why Bayelsa must vote out PDP – Oshiomhole

The Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has
asked the people of Bayelsa State to vote out the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s governorship
election in the state.

Oshiomhole said despite the massive natural
endowments of the state, the PDP subjected the people
to hardship and made them labour in vain under its
umbrella..

The Edo governor, who spoke in Yenagoa during
Tuesday’s final mega rally of APC, said it was time for
Bayelsa to join the broom revolution by voting for the
APC on Saturday.

He said the candidate of the APC, Chief Timipre Sylva,
had been tested and known to have performed better
than the candidate of the PDP and Governor of the state,
Mr. Seriake Dickson.

According to him, Bayelsa cannot afford to be in the
opposition to guarantee massive development in all
sectors.

He said: “We want Bayelsa to fulfill its promises to the
people. So, Sylva has been here, he has worked for you,
he knows you and you know him too. You have tested his
integrity.

“All of us in the APC family are unanimous that with
Sylva, the pace of development in Bayelsa will change,
more money will be invested in education, more jobs will
be created and businesses will be located here.
“So we will work religiously and create jobs that are
meaningful, that are sustainable. When we look at the
faces here, we see a bundle of energetic men and
women who are creative, energetic, resourceful, and
what you need is a leadership that can fire your
imagination.
“I don’t want to be the only South- South governor from
APC. I also want to have a brother, a brother that is taller
than me. Vote for change and then you will know that is
the beginning of good things to come into this state.
“Therefore, on behalf of your brothers and sisters in Edo
State, we will give our solidarity, our support our prayer
and may change come on Saturday so that Bayelsa will
grow from strength to strength.”

Female banker arraigned for N90m fraud

Babatunde Oduewu.
The alleged offences, the prosecutor said, contravened

2011.

maximum of two and three years imprisonment
respectively.
However, the defendant denied all the charges.

defendant bail in the sum of N5million with two sureties
in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till January 26, 2016.

Girlfriend Escapes As Rich Lover Dies In Hotel Room In Lekki, Lagos

There has been anxiety at the Jonaith Hotel
and Suites in the Lekki/Ajah area of Lagos
after a 24yrs old guy, identified as Michael
Afeso, was found dead in one of the hotel
room he checked into.

Michael’s girlfriend, who had stayed with
him on Friday evening, was sighted on
Saturday morning on the CCTV camera,
escaping quietly from the room…

She was said to have fled the hotel before
the arrival of policemen from the Ajah
division, who later took the late Michael’s
corpse to a mortuary.

According to Punch, Michael, an indigene
of Akoko Edo LGa of Edo State, had
checked into a room in the hotel on Friday
and had enjoyed some bottles of beer with
a friend, identified as Abass.

It was learnt that Abass left the deceased in
the company with a lady, whom the latter
had sent for. (?) This statement here is kind
of confusing.

Anyway, the corpse of the victim was said
to have been discovered by one of the hotel
workers, who had gone to his room at
checkout.

A relative of
Michael, identified as Olufemi
Oladejo, said the family was notified by
one of his friends. He said, “When we got
there, the management of the hotel told us
they found the girl in their CCTV tip-toeing
out.

“When we challenged them on why they
did not stop her since they both checked in
together, they changed the story and said
the video was of another room and that it
had nothing to do with the case.

“The hotel management said one Abass,
who was their customer, reserved the room
for Michael. We were told that they both
took some bottles of beer before Abass left.
They said Michael was alone in his room
before they saw his corpse.”

The victim’s father, Pa Abraham, said that
he was expecting his son to send him some
money for upkeep and a project, when he
was told he had died.

He said, “My other children who had been
aware of the incident could not break the
news to me because I was sick. Instead,
they informed my friend, who called me to
his house and broke the sad news to me.
“The hotel management and the police
have been dribbling us and telling us all
kinds of lies. Even our lawyer was
compromised and he has stopped picking
my calls. I insisted that the matter be
transferred from Ajah because I lost
confidence in the police in that division.”
The matter has been transferred to the
State Department of Criminal Investigation,
Yaba.

However, the result of the autopsy
indicated that the victim died of heart
attack and hypertension.
But the late Michael’s family insisted that
the case had been tampered with and
urged Police IG, Solomon Arase, to conduct
an independent investigation into the
matter.

The hotel lawyer, Akran Akra, in a chat
with PUNCH, denied that the hotel covered
up anything.

He said, “There was no time that the hotel
changed any story. We gave the police and
the deceased’s family unlimited access to
our IT rooms on several occasions. The girl
and the man did not go in together. She
came in later as a visitor.

“The fact of the case is that Michael
checked into the hotel on the night of
Friday, October 23, 2015. The room he
checked into had earlier been reserved for
him by one of his friends, who checked in
earlier the same day.

“His friends, who were with him that
night, confirmed that on arrival at the
hotel, the deceased joined them at the pool
bar where they all had drinks together
before retiring to his hotel room to meet
his girlfriend, who he was expecting.
“At about 12.15pm the next day, one of the
hotel’s housekeepers, who was carrying
out a routine clean-up at checkout found
the lifeless body of Michael on the bed.”
He said the hotel management immediately
alerted the police.

“There was no complicity on the part of
the hotel. The food that was served by the
chef was not eaten by the deceased. The
CCTV footage did not indicate a foul play,”
he stressed.

President Buhari To Leave For South Africa Tomorrow

President Buhari will leave for South Africa
tomorrow December 3rd to participate in
the Forum on China/Africa Cooperation
(FOCAC).

A statement issued by the Special Assistant
to the President on Media and Publicity,
Garba Shehu, says that during the forum
Buhari will have a meeting with Chinese
president, Xi Jinping, on how to re-
commence stalled rail projects under new
terms that would see China providing
nearly all the financing required.

The statement in part reads
“Of particular interest is the coastal railway
project stretching for 1,402 kilometres
linking Lagos in the west with Calabar in
the South; a project that is expected to be
financed with $12 billion Chinese loan and
which will create about 200,000 jobs.

Another rail project that will be up for
renegotiation is the $8.3bn Lagos-Kano
standard gauge modernisation project, of
which only a segment, Kaduna-Abuja, had
reached completion stage.

President Buhari is also expected to discuss
ways of removing all obstacles in the way
of the 3,050 MW Mambila Power Station,
considered a strategic project which was
conceived in 1982 but has not taken off.

The Chinese president had informed
President Buhari of the willingness of his
country to finance the whole project
through a special loan agreement,” the
statement said.

Those to accompany him on the trip are
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey
Onyema; Minister of Transportation,
Chubuike Amaechi; and the Minister of
Industry, Trade and Investment,
Okechukwu Enelamah. They are expected
back to the country on Saturday December
5th.

Man Tortures Apprentice To Death Over Allegations Of Poor Sales (Photo)

Family members and relatives of Master
Tochukwu Nwagbala have called on police
to investigate the circumstances
surrounding the alleged murder of their
son.

The late Nwagbala, an apprentice in Benin,
Edo State, was allegedly murdered by his
master under whom he had served for
several years.

The distraught family has petitioned the
state Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris
Ezike, alleging conspiracy among top
officers of the state police command over
Nwagbala’s death. The family asked Ezike
to order investigation to unravel how the
body of Ezike was dumped at the Benin by-
pass.

According to the family, the late Nwagbala
had for over the years managed the
business for his boss.

The master was said to have recently
travelled out of the country.

He was reported to have on return
allegedly tortured the apprentice to death
over allegations of poor returns.
In the petition to the commissioner of
police, the family alleged that it learnt that
Nwagbala was tortured to death by his
boss and others now at large.
Counsel to the family, Lanre Ajetunmobi,
in the petition, said that Nwagbala was
beaten with cane and electric cable by his
boss for several hours and when he
fainted, he took his remains in his car to
Faith Mediplex in Benin.

Ajetunmobi added that at the clinic,
Nwagbala was declared as “brought in
dead,” while an autopsy report by the
police revealed that he died of “acute
cardiovascular failure from severe
torture”.

The lawyer alleged that at the DPO’s office,
Nwagbala’s master feigned ignorance of
the circumstances of the boy’s death, which

Dismissed police officer, 1 other arrested for vandalizing man-hole (photo)

Read the press statement below...
In a renewed effort to rid Lagos State of criminals,
operatives of the Rapid Response Squad yesterday
arrested a dismissed police officer  and one other
person for  vanfalizing and stealing man - hole cover.

The suspect, Earnest Young (30),, who co
incidentally is a son of a retired Deputy
Superintendentbof Police was arrested  with his
accomplice, Rasheed Tiamiyu, (20), on Eko Bridge
around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Young hails from Yala Local Government in Cross Rivers. He
was arrested in possession of man – hole covers ,

vandalized and stolen on the Eko Bridge.
Young stated that, he and his accomplice trekked from Ijora
Under Bridge to Eko Bridge to steal the man hole cover. He
added that they were in search of food when they saw the
man – hole cover, which they planned to sell to cart
pushers.

He explained that his accomplice, Rasheed Tiamiyu, a
primary school dropout invited him into the crime, a claim
Tiamiyu promptly denied, stressing that, ‘Young, rather, was
the one who invited him into the crime.
‘He insisted " we steal the cover even when I protested that
we leave it and that was why the cover was found in his
hand. The entire plan was all his idea’, ".
Tiamiyu maintained that "despite the fact that cover was
very heavy, Young insisted in stealing it with the plan to
resell it to scrap metal buyers the following day" .

‘Both of us work as load carriers in Ijora. We sleep in Ijora
park. We had no money to feed ourselves and he requested
that go to a party in Isale Eko, and that on our way we would
pick up the man – hole cover to sell to cart pushers’,
Tiamiyu added.

Tiamiyu further stated that, he came from Plateau to Lagos
in search of work but since he came to Lagos, he has been
homeless and struggling to survive as well as living in parks
and under bridges.
Confirming the arrest of the suspects, the Commander of
the Rapid Response Squad, Assistant Commissioner of
Police, ACP Olatunji Disu noted that the actions of the
suspects posed a great danger to road users, adding that
uncovered man – hole can cause accident, particularly at
night.

He also advised parents to monitor the activities of their
wards, warning that Lagos would not be a breeding ground
for criminals.
The suspects have been charged to court.

Okonjo-Iweala ought to face criminal prosecution - Oshiomole

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomole says former Minister
of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala ought to be made to face
criminal prosecution in the ongoing $2.1 billion arms deal
probe. In an exclusive interview with Leadership newspaper,
Oshiomole said Dasuki in his defense stated that Former
President Jonathan approved the release of the money for
the purchase of the arms, a claim that has since been
denied by Jonathan.

Oshiomole said it was criminal of Jonathan and Okonjo-
Iweala to spend money that wasn't approved by the National
Assembly ...
“The issue is whether the Nigerian President under
the constitution has the power to approve funds
belonging to local, state and federal government-
funds that have not been appropriated by the
National Assembly. That is a criminal offense for
which Okonjo-Iweala ought to face criminal
prosecution. These things are just discussed and
wished away. For me, I will stick for the truth and
don’t care what people will say. Talking about
revelation, look at the letter credited to Dasuki – the
immediate past National Security Adviser. In his
defence which I read in your paper, he seems to
admit that money was spent but it was approved by
the President. Does the Nigerian constitution
empower the President to spend money which has
not been appropriated by the National Assembly?

And they took cash from the CBN. The Money
Laundering Act says if you take cash in excess of N5
million transaction, it is money laundering and it is
criminal. So, by Dasuki’s letter, he has also
confirmed that Okonjo-Iweala is a privy to spending
money never appropriated and therefore criminal,
and that cash were being moved contrary to the
money laundering act. Just using Dasuki’s own
defence, you can see a case of conspiracy has been
established between Dasuki, Okonjo-Iweala and all
those involved in that transaction,” Oshiomhole said

UNN students cry out over 'mandatory' N70,000 laptop fee

Recently, the university administration in it's bid to
industrialize the school with information technology
introduced a mandatory policy, where all students must own
a laptop and pay N70,000 as laptop fee. But many students
are unhappyo that such levies have been imposed on them.

Students said that this new policy is making education so
difficult for the poor, as with this policy, many students
would now be paying close to N200,000 in a federal
university per session.

The students are calling the new Education Minister to call
the vice chancellor to order..that laptop ownership should be
a choice and not mandatory!

Karim Benzema has no place in national team due to sex tape scandal, says French prime minister

The French Prime Minister joined in the criticism of Karim
Benzema on Tuesday, saying the Real Madrid striker "has no
place" on the France team at the European Championship in
the wake of a blackmail scandal involving teammate Mathieu
Valbuena.

Benzema is one of France's key players as it gets ready to
host the Euro 2016 tournament, but he faces allegations of
teaming up with a friend to extort money from teammate
Mathieu Valbuena using blackmail over a sex tape the Lyon
midfielder recorded.

His alleged active role in pressuring France teammate
Mathieu Valbuena has badly damaged his reputation and
could even earn him the sack at Real Madrid.
A great athlete should be exemplary," Prime Minister Manuel
Valls told French radio Europe 1. "If he is not, he has no
place within the France team."

The investigation, started when Valbuena took legal action
after being contacted by a man claiming to possess an
incriminating sex tape.

In a case that could drag on for months, Benzema's
involvement has not yet been fully determined. But
investigators who charged him in October believe he was
approached by a childhood friend to act as an intermediary
and convince Valbuena to deal directly with the black
mailers, it should be noted that Benzema in 2008 did the
same thing with Djibril Cisse over a sex tape.
"If a minister was handed preliminary charges, he would no
longer be part of the government," Valls said.
Benzema denies any wrongdoing but his arguments were
undermined last week when Valbuena spoke directly about
his attempts to pressure him in an interview with Le Monde
newspaper.

"There are so many kids, so many youngsters in our
suburbs that relate to great athletes," Valls said. "They wear
the blue jersey, the colors of France, which are so important
in these moments."

Benzema's laywer hit back at French prime minister Valls.
"So what's the prime minister doing about presumption of
innocence?" Alain Jakubowicz said on RTL radio. "This case
is being played out in the media in an absolutely scandalous
way, prompting the prime minister to express himself on a
case he knows absolutely nothing about. Who will it be
tomorrow? The president of France?"

Brutal bully jailed for breaking 32 bones in gf's 6 month old baby

A brutal bully, 22 year old James Laidlaw, was jailed for 19
years after leaving his girlfriend's six-month-old son with 32
broken bones. He abused the defenceless tot over a three-
month period.

Warwick Crown Court in the UK heard he broke both of the
baby's legs and arms and nearly every rib in his body.

Nurses said the boy went 'wide-eyed with fear' whenever
there was a loud noise or someone approached him.

The baby is now in the care of the govt.
The infant was taken to University Hospital Coventry by his
mother Tiffany Hilton in May last year when he was five
months old.

Medics carried out tests for suspected bronchiolitis but x-
rays revealed he had suffered numerous fractures.
Medical evidence showed the first assaults probably took
place when the tot was just two weeks old.
He also had a damaged spine consistent with a fall from a
first-floor window - caused when he was thrown across the
room.

Evil Laidlaw was jailed for 19 years after being convicted of
GBH with intent.
Hilton, 27, was locked up for three years for failing to protect
her son.

Both defendants, who live in Coventry, were also convicted
of child cruelty following a trial.
Jailing the couple, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano said:
"He sustained a really shocking set of injuries. "A
total of 32 broken bones including both arms, both
legs and all the ribs on one side, most of them in two
places.

A former Minister of state under former President
Jonathan's administration, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, has
been arrested and is being interrogated by operatives of the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over
allegations of receiving money running into Billions of Naira
which he cannot account for while he was in office.

The large sums of money were allegedly transferred to him
between December 2014 and May 2015. A source at EFCC
said the former Minister who was picked up by 4pm today,

amount of money from the office of the former National
Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, who is being
investigated over a two billion dollars arms deal.

FG to implement Niger Delta Master Plan – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the Federal
Government is focused on implementation of Niger Delta
Master Plan to drive development of the region.
Osinbajo stated this at the inaugural meeting of Partners
for Sustainable Development Forum organised by Niger
Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in Port Harcourt
on Monday.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari had also
expressed concern with current degradation of the
environment with a view to addressing challenges faced
by the region.

“Niger Delta remains a priority of the President
Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government with a view to
attending to current devastation and environmental
degradation in the region.

“The federal government will give NDDC all necessary
assistance and support to achieve its mandate of
ensuring rapid and sustainable development of the
region.

“For meaningful and sustainable development to take
place in the region, citizens and stakeholders must be
peaceful while curbing militancy and eliminating
terrorism,” he said.
Represented by Mr Adeola Ipaye, the Deputy Chief of
Staff in the Presidency, Osinbajo added that Niger Delta,
being the world’s third largest wetland, had immense
potential to become an agriculture hub.
He said the nation’s over-dependence on crude oil was
partly responsible for “redundant human resource base
and high level of corruption.”

According to him, there has to be a major shift from
dependence on oil to agricultural production which will
assist job creation and encourage development of the
manufacturing sector.
The Vice President assured that ongoing clean up of
several years of un-addressed oil pollution in Ogoni area
of Rivers and other communities in the region would be
completed.

Managing Director of NDDC, Mr. Bassey Dan-Abia said
poor funding was a major challenge facing the
commission.
He explained that the commission was an intervention
agency, not an alternate government, as widely held by
some people.
“Youths should reduce the level of restiveness because
NDDC does not have the capacity to solve all their
problems.
“Restiveness and tension caused by some youths in the
region clearly have direct negative impact on the
development of the region”, he said.
Dan-Abia called on the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas
Company (NLNG) to commence payment of its own
contribution to funding of the commission.
According to him, this is based on the fact that NLNG
falls within the oil and gas producing companies within
the Niger Delta.

Lagos to sanction landlords with poor septic tanks

Lagos State government has vowed to clamp down on
owners of buildings with poor or substandard septic
tanks, declaring the practice as unhealthy and could lead
to outbreak of epidemic.

The government also warned landlords with multi-room
tenement, who have just one toilet for over 60 residents
to make amend without further delay, saying it would no
longer tolerate such attitude. According to it, such
buildings constitute environmental nuisance.
Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Babatunde
Adejare, gave this warning Monday while speaking at the
stakeholder’s forum for Sensitization and Public
Awareness on Environmental and Health Implications,

which took place at the Agege Mini Stadium.
The Commissioner reiterated that the state government
would no longer permit idea of having any landlord
making available just a toilet for use of about 60 tenants,
saying such idea would no longer be tolerated.
According to him, the management of 2.1billion litres of
waste water generated by over 20 million Lagosians daily,
with the attendant health and environmental implication
is a task that necessitates the ongoing efforts.
“The law prescribes punishment for them. Now, KAI,

environmental officers will be doing part of it. This is part
of what they will be doing. We will come to enforce the
law. A lot of things are abnormal in our environment; we
won’t allow people to dispose refuse in the drainage.
“Imagine a landlord of 25 rooms having a single toilet. He

makes money from the building but cannot get toilet for
the tenants. How much do people build a toilet? Since
government doesn’t collect any money from landlords,
they should use it to build toilets for their tenants.
“The idea of tenants queuing before they can use the
toilet will no longer be tolerated. Just imagine a 25 room
apartment and over 10 people live in each of the rooms.

How can they cope with one toilet?” he queried.
Adejare, who described the theme of the stakeholders
forum entitled: “Waste water Management-Perfecting the
Natural Practice” as apt, added that people should desist
from digging their bore hole and well water close to the
septic tank, saying such practice always  lead to
epidemics.
“Your environment determines the kind of the person you
are. That’s why the development of a country is
measured by how hygienic your environment is,” the
commissioner said.
Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of the
Environment, Mr. Adeshina Onisarutu, who also spoke at
the event, warned against discharging of waste effluents
into the drains by some landlords.

“Many people erroneously think that once their waste is
disposed into the drains that is all. It is not so at all, we
must take care of our environment at all times. Whatever
we disposed wrongly will always come back to us.
“We have turned our environment, drainage channels to
dump sites. Government spends huge resources to treat
water that we drink. The lagoon and the sea are filled
with dirt disposed by residents. This is not good for us
as people,” Onisarutu said.
